Windows XP Service Pack 2: A Closer Look

Why SP2 is the most important update ever for Windows XP

Every IT pro knows it: there always seem to be a few unforeseen compatibility issues when service packs are deployed. This article looks at the changes in Windows XP SP2 that affect IT pros, and why we think you will find it a worthwhile-maybe even great-update. Windows XP SP2 brings enhancements to everything from Web browsing to wireless networking. But make no mistake: SP2 is, first and foremost, about security. So let's start there.

Temporarily Disabling Delivery of Windows XP Service Pack 2 Through Windows Update and Automatic Updates
Microsoft views Windows XP SP2 as an essential security update and is therefore distributing it as a "critical update" via Windows Update (WU) and the Automatic Updates (AU) delivery mechanism in Windows. Microsoft strongly urges customers with Windows XP and Windows XP Service Pack 1-based systems to update to Windows XP SP2 as soon as possible.

While recognizing the security benefits of Windows XP SP2, some organizations have requested the ability to temporarily disable delivery of this update via AU and WU. These organizations have populations of PCs, upon which they have enabled AU. This is done to ensure that these PCs receive all critical security updates.

Since SP2 will start to be delivered to PCs running Windows XP or Windows XP with SP1 via AU starting on August 16, these customers would like to temporarily block the delivery of SP2 in order to provide additional time for validation and testing of the update. In response to these requests, Microsoft is providing options to temporarily disable and then re-enable delivery of Windows XP SP2 via AU and WU. Read more.

    Notes from the Editor
Welcome to this Special Edition of TechNet Flash. With this week's release of Windows XP SP2 and some of the complexities of updating managed and unmanaged systems, we want to give IT pros a good head start on the resources to help make this deployment a successful one. So, first, the obvious question: Where can you get it?

How to Get Windows XP SP2
For updating multiple computers, Microsoft recommends using the 266 MB network installer, available for download from the TechNet IT Pro portal.

And soon, a CD containing this code will be available free upon request, from the Windows XP SP2 page.

Do not click download if you are updating just one computer: A smaller, more appropriate download will be available soon on Windows Update. To receive this download, turn on the Automatic Updates feature in Windows XP to receive an optimized download of SP2. Please visit Protect Your PC for more information on receiving Windows XP SP2.

The Microsoft Download Center site is your only authorized web source for downloading a licensed copy of Windows XP Service Pack 2. To report a website offering unlicensed copies of Windows XP SP2 for download, please send e-mail to: piracy@microsoft.com or visit the Software Piracy Protection page.

All versions of the Windows XP SP2 code distributed through Microsoft's site, beginning August 9, have a genuine Microsoft digital signature that you can verify by right-clicking and viewing the properties setting. The MD5 checksum of the real file is 59a98f181fe383907e520a391d75b5a7. A network-install version released to MSDN subscribers between August 6-8 did not include this certificate and yields a different MD5 checksum; however, to ensure you have the latest release, we recommend checking for the presence of a valid certificate before installing any network-installable version.

    Security for IT Pros

More on Security Enhancements in Windows XP Service Pack 2
Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) provides new proactive security technologies for Windows XP, to better defend against viruses, worms, and hackers. In addition to a more robust security infrastructure, SP2 improves the security configuration options of Windows XP, and provides better security information to help users faced with security decisions. Microsoft Security Bulletins MS02-055 (323255) through MS04-025 (867801) are included in Service Pack 2.

New version of MBSA (1.2.1) needed for Windows XP SP2 compatibility!
The Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer (MBSA) version 1.2.1 update will be needed to provide compatibility and deeper integration with Windows XP SP2 security improvements. The MBSA update will be available in mid-August, and users running MBSA 1.2 will be automatically notified when they run the tool from the Start menu with an Internet connection.

Re: Windows XP Service Pack 2: A Closer Look
